Navigating the Cover Design Jungle: Tips for Commissioning or DIY-ing a Book Cover that Sells

Whether you're perusing a bookstore or scrolling through an online retailer, one of the first things you're likely to check after a book's cover is its blurb—the enticing summary on the back cover or the book description online. A well-crafted blurb can be the difference between a potential reader choosing to dive into your story or moving on to another title. Here's how you can craft a blurb that captivates and converts.

1. Understand the Purpose of a Blurb

The blurb isn't a mere summary. Its primary purpose is to entice, intrigue, and sell your book. It's a teaser, a trailer, a promise of the journey awaiting the reader inside.

2. Start Strong

Your opening line is critical. It should immediately capture the reader's attention and evoke curiosity. Think of it as a hook—a promise of conflict, mystery, romance, or adventure.

Example: "In a city where magic is banned, a young mage fights to keep her deadly secrets hidden."

3. Introduce Your Main Character(s)

Without diving deep into their backstory, give readers a glimpse of who they'll be following, focusing on their desires, challenges, or dilemmas.

Example: "Lila, a rebellious mage-in-hiding, struggles to navigate the treacherous streets of Ironhold, where every glance could reveal her forbidden powers."

4. Present the Stakes

Clearly outline what's at risk. What will happen if the protagonist fails in their endeavor? The stakes amplify the tension and give potential readers a reason to invest emotionally.

Example: "But when a dark force threatens to tear the city apart, Lila's secret becomes her only weapon—and her greatest peril."

5. Evoke the Mood and Setting

Give readers a taste of the world they'll be entering, whether it's a sprawling fantasy realm, a futuristic dystopia, or a contemporary setting with a twist.

Example: "Set against the backdrop of Ironhold's shadowy alleyways and forbidden magic dens, a game of power and deceit unfolds."

6. Keep it Concise

While it's tempting to delve into subplots and secondary characters, remember that less is often more when it comes to blurbs. Aim for 100-200 words for fiction titles.

7. Avoid Spoilers

While you want to give readers a taste of the story, revealing too much can diminish the intrigue. Steer clear of major plot twists or the resolution of primary conflicts.

8. End with a Bang

Your closing line should leave readers eager to turn the page. A question, a hint of danger, or a cliffhanger can be effective.

Example: "With enemies lurking in every shadow, can Lila harness her forbidden powers and save the city, or will she be the spark that sets her world aflame?"

9. Test and Revise

Once you've written your blurb, test it out. Share it with beta readers, friends, or fellow writers. Gather feedback and be open to revisions. What intrigues one reader might not resonate with another, so aim for a balance.

10. Consider Your Genre

While the aforementioned tips are generally applicable, remember to consider genre-specific conventions. Romance readers might be looking for emotional stakes, while thriller enthusiasts will want a promise of twists and suspense.

11. Look to Favorites for Inspiration

Analyze blurbs from bestsellers or personal favorites in your genre. What made them stand out? How do they structure their blurbs? While you shouldn't copy, they can serve as useful templates.

12. Incorporate Keywords (for Online Listings)

If you're listing your book online, incorporating relevant keywords can boost discoverability. However, ensure they fit naturally into your blurb.

Crafting a killer blurb is both an art and a science. While it's a relatively small chunk of text compared to your actual book, its importance can't be overstated. A compelling blurb not only introduces your story to potential readers but convinces them to take the plunge into your world. Invest the time to refine it, test it, and polish it until it shines as brightly as the narrative within your pages.
